RAY MORIMURA (REI)

Woodblock

Contemporary Japanese print artist Ray Morimura creates charming, intricately detailed woodblocks depict temples, festivals and the tranquil countryside of Japan from unusual and fresh perspectives. This, combined with Ray Morimura’s ability to reinterpret these subjects through a decidedly Deco-esque eye, makes him unique among woodblock artists worldwide.

Morimura-san was born in 1948 in Yamagata Prefecture and graduated from Tokyo Gakugei University in 1970. After working as a designer at the Mainichi Shimbun (Newspaper), and publishing company Kamakura Shobo, he became a freelance book designer, print maker and illustrator. He currently teaches at Tokyo Zokei University and Nihon Kogakuin School.

His work has appeared in numerous solo and group shows in Japan—including the College Women’s Association of Japan (CWAJ) Print Show from 1990 to 2013—and abroad in Korea, and the US (Seattle, San Francisco, New York Portland and Phoenix), as well as The Reingold Gallery.
